Not of Works

Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.

I have recently come to see more and more how everyday life is a parable (see What Do I See? and Life Is a Parable). I had to smile today when I looked in the mirror and combed my hair after a long nap. I had exercised with a trainer (really pretty strenuously), eaten lunch and taken a bath before falling into bed with wet hair (which had been combed, but that’s all). I expected my hair to be sticking up in all directions when I awakened with it completely dry. But, to my surprise, it looked almost as if I had been to a hairdresser, much better than it did the day before when I worked to make it look good for an event I was attending.

My first thought was the Scripture quoted above: Not of works, lest any man should boast. I certainly couldn’t boast about having styled my hair. It was just another parable to remind me of how the law kills and the Spirit gives life, of once again coming to the place of let rather than always working to make things happen (see Come to the Place of Let).
